About Japan banknotes
The Bank of Japan began issuing notes in 1885. During the Second World War Japan printed occupation currency for the territories it controlled, such as the Malayan "banana money" and Philippine peso notes, which became nearly worthless as inflation soared. After the war the yen was reformed and stabilised.
