This USA 5 Dollars 1953 P-381 VF banknote is a classic example of mid-20th-century American currency and an essential piece of U.S. paper money history. Issued as a United States Note, it features the iconic red Treasury seal, distinguishing it from modern green-seal Federal Reserve Notes still in circulation today.

🔴 What Makes a Red Seal Note Special

Unlike Federal Reserve Notes, United States Notes were issued directly by the U.S. Treasury and represented a different form of legal tender. Red seal notes circulated alongside green seal bills for decades but were phased out in the 1960s, making this a closed and historic currency type no longer produced.

🇺🇸 Iconic American Design

Obverse: A finely engraved portrait of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States and one of the most enduring figures in American history.

Reverse: The Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., a symbol of unity, democracy, and later, the civil rights movement.

The pairing of Lincoln’s portrait with the Lincoln Memorial gives this note strong crossover appeal for history collectors, not just numismatists.

📜 A Transitional Era Banknote

The 1953 series was issued during a time when the U.S. monetary system was consolidating. Multiple types of paper money still circulated, but Federal Reserve Notes were becoming dominant. Within a decade, red seal notes like this one were quietly withdrawn from everyday use.

✍️ Signature Varieties Add Collectibility

The 1953 $5 United States Note exists with multiple Treasurer–Secretary signature combinations. Many collectors enjoy identifying and upgrading specific varieties, adding another layer of long-term interest even for common issues.

📐 Classic Look and Feel

Although officially a “small-size” note, 1950s U.S. bills are known for their:

  • Heavier paper stock
  • Deep, detailed engraving
  • Rich ink saturation

These characteristics give them a noticeably different tactile feel compared to modern U.S. currency.

💵 Heavy Circulation, Honest Survivors

As a $5 denomination, this note was widely used in everyday commerce. Most examples were folded, handled, and redeemed, making VF (Very Fine) notes honest survivors that retain strong visual detail while showing authentic circulation wear.

🔍 Engraving & Security

The Lincoln portrait showcases exceptionally fine line engraving, a classic security method used before modern holograms and color-shifting inks. It’s often used as a teaching example of traditional banknote craftsmanship.

🎓 Collector Appeal

This note is especially popular as:

  • A gateway red seal note for new collectors
  • A cornerstone piece for U.S. type sets
  • A historically important example of discontinued U.S. currency

Its combination of iconic design, historical context, and accessibility keeps demand strong and consistent.

CONDITION GUIDE

Gem Uncirculated

A note that is flawless, with the same freshness, crispness and bright color as when first printed. It
must be perfectly centered, with full margins, and free of any marks, blemishes or traces of handling.

About Uncirculated

A bright, crisp note that appears new but upon close examination shows a trace of very light use, such as  a corner fold or faint crease. 'About Uncirculated' is a borderline condition, applied to a note which may not be quite uncirculated, but yet is obviously better than an average Extra Fine note. Such notes command a price only slightly below a new note and are highly desirable.

Extra Fine

A note that shows some faint evidence of circulation, although it will still be bright and retain nearly full crispness. It may have two or three minor folds or creases but no tears or stains and no discolorations.

Very Fine

A note that has been in circulation, but not actively or for long. It still retains some crispness and is still choice enough in its condition to be altogether desirable. It may show folds or creases, or some light smudges from the hands of a past generation. Sometimes, Very Fine notes are the best available in certain rare issues, and they should accordingly be cherished just as much as uncirculated notes.

Fine

A fine note shows evidence of much more circulation, has lost its crispness and very fine detail, and creases are more pronounced, although the note is still not seriously soiled or stained.
