Issued by the Banco de México during the 1980s, this note pays profound tribute to the Niños Héroes (Boy Heroes)—six teenage military cadets who died defending Chapultepec Castle in Mexico City from invading U.S. forces during the Battle of Chapultepec in 1847. According to legend, one cadet wrapped himself in the Mexican flag and jumped from the castle roof to prevent it from falling into enemy hands. This era of high-denomination currency was eventually phased out and replaced by the "Nuevo Peso" in 1993, making these classic notes highly collectible today.
