📖 History and Significance:
The ouguiya replaced the CFA franc in 1973, when Mauritania left the West African monetary union, and it is one of only two non-decimal currencies in the world (1 ouguiya = 5 khoums). On 1 January 2018 the Central Bank of Mauritania redenominated at 10 old ouguiya to 1 new ouguiya, and every note in this set was demonetised on 1 January 2019. The 28 November dates on the notes mark Mauritania’s independence day in 1960. The 1989-dated 1000 Ouguiya is a Giesecke & Devrient design that was never put into circulation.

🎨 Design Details:
The fronts carry Arabic lettering with geometric Saharan ornament, while the backs, in French, show daily life and landmarks: an ardin harp and a cow before the Chinguetti mosque, a mortar and pestle, harvesters in the fields, mining at Zouérat, fish and fishing boats, and on the unissued 1989 note a camel, a cargo ship, port cranes and a factory.
