This October (10/10) we celebrate the bicentenary of Paul Kruger’s birth, a significant figure in South Africa’s history. His legacy is kept alive in politics, culture, as well as numismatics. Paul Kruger ranks in the top 20 of people portrayed on the most coins in history, top 5 if monarchs are excluded, according to Landon Coleske, Bassani’s Auction House’s historian.
Kruger served as President of the South African Republic, during which South Africa’s first national coinage was introduced. “They represented not only a new currency but a statement of sovereignty and craftsmanship. Today, these early Kruger coins, particularly
high-grade gold issues, are among the most valuable collectibles in the world” says Coleske.
