As Italian forces approached, Yugoslav treasury money hidden in a cave was set on fire, but local people rescued a large quantity of the notes. The Italian authorities declared the serial numbers of the burned stock void and ordered everyone holding Yugoslav notes to bring them in for registration. Notes that passed the check were marked with a round VERIFICATO (\"verified\") handstamp, making them legal money again in occupied Montenegro.
