In 1991 the government of Violeta Chamorro introduced the córdoba oro, pegged one-to-one with the US dollar and worth five million old córdobas. To give the new currency credibility the Banco Central de Nicaragua issued even its smallest values — 1, 5, 10 and 25 centavos — as paper notes, printed by Harrison & Sons in England. They are a rare example of “cent” denominations issued as banknotes in the late 20th century, and coins soon took over these values.

🎨 Design Details:
All three fronts show Francisco Hernández de Córdoba (c. 1475–1526) in a ruffled collar, with the value in a large central cartouche and the signatures of the bank’s officials; the 1 is purple, the 5 red and the 25 blue-grey.
