The portrait is Tuanku Abdul Rahman (1895–1960), the first Yang di-Pertuan Agong, or Supreme Head, of independent Malaya, wearing the royal Tengkolok Diraja headdress; his portrait has appeared on Malaysian banknotes ever since. The note is signed by Tun Ismail Mohamed Ali, the first Malaysian Governor of the central bank. Notes of this first type have the spellings "DI-PERLAKUKAN" and "GABENOR"; from 1972 they were printed as "DIPERLAKUKAN" and "GABENUR" (P-7), so P-1 is the earlier of the two.

🎨 Design Details:
Front: Tuanku Abdul Rahman at right in the Tengkolok Diraja, "SATU RINGGIT" at centre on a radiating red and green guilloche, and the value "$1" in a star pattern at lower left.
