Motiejus Valančius (1801–1875), Bishop of Samogitia, was a writer and educator who founded parish schools, required lessons in Lithuanian and led a large temperance movement against drinking. Trakai Island Castle, on Lake Galvė near Vilnius, was a seat of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania and is one of the country's best-known landmarks.
